| 12 Aug 2008: Mortimer Racing dominated the OFFC over a rainy weekend, earning 7
podium finishes in two days.
Matt White reinforced his reputation in the A class as a rain master on Saturday, earning pole position and gaining 15 seconds on the second place car within the first lap. By the time he was given the chequered flag, Matt had lapped all but seven cars. Sunday saw a somewhat drier repeat performance, with Matt again starting from pole and immediately distancing himself from the pack, leading the race from flag to flag. Lew Mackenzie was a familiar face on the podium this weekend, scoring his first win in the rain on Saturday and posting a third on Sunday, reinforcing his lead in the B class championship. Caitlin Johnston employed the services of Team Mortimer for the weekend, racking up two third place A class finishes and claiming the honour of the fastest lap on Sunday. Dave Grimes: Returning to the racing scene after a 25-year hiatus, Dave placed a respectable third in the B class on Saturday, but was sidelined on Sunday after a spin in qualifying. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 28 Jul 2008: Message from Andrew Masson. Hello Everybody, I just wanted to let you all know that I am home now, and recovering well. My DEEPEST thanks go out to everyone that helped my father and I through it. I can't tell you how much all your support means to us. I'm sure you heard the extent of my injuries, but you should all know that I was begining to walk on crutches the next day, and I am VERY lucky there is no major permanent damage. I will not be racing any more this season, so I wish you all the best, and may see you at the track. Andrew Mason B.Eng MASc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunoco 94 Father’s Day Double Header Weekend // Toronto Tirecraft 100 This weekend marked the 5th and 6th rounds for the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge. It is also the midway point for the Championship. While the OFFC is a regional series, this pro-weekend the series held its own. The field was comprised of 32 cars, five of which were from our neighbouring province of Quebec. The race weekend was held at Mosport International Raceway www.mosport.com Series regulars Shane Jantzi, Maizex Seeds Inc. car #71 and Matt White, Roundup car #05 sparred with Conor Daly, INDECK Forsythe Racing car #2, not far in tow with this group like always was Dean Baker’s Kerr Industries car #52. What has become the norm for the FFA drivers the top 3 changed positions almost every lap. Dean Baker’s patience would be fruitful on the last lap, when Conor Daly would go off at turn 10 after hitting tires with Shane Jantzi and Dean would leap to 3rd position for the chequered flag. This weekend Caitlin Johnston’s Pizza Pizza car #4 found some great speed and she found herself qualifying in 5th spot behind Dean Baker. Paul Kostoff’s car #15 would pass Caitlin during the final laps and he found himself in 4th place behind Dean. Caitlin would have her best finish at 5th and Conor would suffer a DNF. Other FFA notes for round 5 would see Grant Goddard’s car #5 and Rick Doktor’s car #90 suffering DNF’s. In FFB both Andrew Mason car #32 and Dan Purdy car #23 would suffer DNF’s, Andrew in the first lap due to engine failure and Dan after lap 11. This left Lew MacKenzie’s car #96, Eric Nielsen’s car #60 and Steve Bodrug car #41 battling for the top three honours. Eric caught the top two and bided his time to eventually over take Steve. While Eric caught Lew, time and laps ran out, leaving Lew MacKenzie taking first position, with Eric Nielsen in second position and Steve Bodrug in third position. In FFC Mike Lee car #25, finds himself again on the podium in first. Tony Cove car #83 would be second and Andrew Celovsky car #124 would be in third. Ross Smith car #28 would DNF and Jeff McGibbon Car #97 would not start the race. Round 6 of the weekend had a number of surprises for the Ontario Formula Ford Drivers. We were all rooting and cheering on fellow driver Conor as he competed in the Skip Barber Racing School race. Conor did not disappoint his friends and fans as he took first place. A great start to the day, for the young driver bouncing back from the previous days loss. Due to race 5 shenanigans, Ivan Graham’s car #3 having suffered a spin-off at turn ten would not start on Sunday’s race 6. Twenty-six drivers would start the race. Four would not due to engine failure and damage sustained from race 5. All three FF classes would not be a repeat of race 5 as far as podiums go. FFA’s Conor Daly would take his next win of the day and land in first place, with Matt White taking second and Shane Jantzi taking third. The FFB found Lew MacKenzie in first, Eric Neilson once again in second and Nigel Mortimer in car #95 in third. FFC found Tony Cove in first, Mike Lee in second and Ross Smith in car #28 on the podium first time this year for third. During Podium presentations, Series Sponsor Jeff Wendzel and his two young sons presented the drivers with their trophies for the Toronto Tirecraft 100. Jeff is the owner/manager of the Toronto Tirecraft Concord location. Dear Friends, What a great adventure I participated in which you all shared during the Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital. It was an amazing experience meeting so many people and being cheered on along the route and seeing some beautiful country along the way. On Saturday early evening during some festivities under the tent there was a lot of commotion in the parking lot and they quickly ushered the late arriving cyclist to the stage. This young girl, a cancer survivor just completed the first day of her journey taking 11 hours to ride to Hamilton with one leg! She received a standing ovation as she made her way to the stage. There wasn't a dry eye listening to her describe her gratitude appreciating every moment that life brings. She was a great inspiration to us all. I did an afterburn ride with Steve Bauer the Canadian Olympic medal winner with a small group on Saturday afternoon after the first 102 Km. We covered an additional 58Km riding almost to Brantford and back to Mohawk College. I wasn't sure if I could do the afterburn and I almost backed out but I had over 2 1/2 hours to recover before the secondary ride began and I felt I still had a lot of energy. Steve rides pretty fast! All together over the two days I covered 267 Km. The experience was rewarding in so many ways having the task of raising money and the physical challenge of being prepared for the event and actually riding it. It was very emotional for me at the start, and then coming down the mountain into Dundas seeing McMaster hospital where Michael received most of his treatments and again climbing the mountain on the other side going to Ancaster. As I climbed the mountain thinking of Michael's experiences and the struggles of others I only shed sweat as they shed tears battling this disease. Sunday night Michele drove home as I took a well-deserved nap. I was tired and went to bed early but Monday morning I felt as I did early Sunday and I thought I could probably ride again. The weather was good for me but some others were not as lucky on Saturday with a bit of rain showers. On Sunday the weather was cloudy and a bit cooler but in Niagara the weather was clearing and it was sunny and hot for the celebration. Thanks for your support because without that, an event like this would never happen. I raised $54,280 but more importantly $14 million was raised from 2850 cyclists. There is strength in numbers! I urge all of you to consider participating in this Conquest for "09 as it appeals to cyclists of all abilities. Once again, thanks for your support, Rick Click here to visit my personal page. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18 Jun 2008: OFFC Series Hats, Sweatshirts, Golf shirts (men/women) and Jacquets are now available Hats---- $11 Sweatshirts---- $22 Golf Shirt mens or womens ------$35 Jackets ------- $49 All these prices include the embroidery and taxes. The series demonstrated a depth of talent in a field of 22 cars for the third and fourth rounds of the 2008 championship season. Saturday’s round three threw a plethora of weather changes, from torrential down pours, steaming heat under sunny/cloudy skies and then cool breezes interchanging with cold winds. Track conditions were changing from one extreme to another constantly testing the resolve of the drivers and their racing abilities. Qualifying round three had Shane Jantzi, Maizex Seeds car #71 on pole, Conor Daly, Indeck/Forsythe Racing car #4 in second, Matt White car # 5 would start third and Dean Baker car #52 would start in fourth. The stage for race three would be set. Race three had the track drying but still slick in areas that pooled water from earlier rain. Jean Guy Fournier found himself out by the first lap. The field found themselves spreading out into packs with amazing passes for positions throughout. Shane Jantzi, Matt White and Conor Daly would challenge each other for position with Shane Jantzi suffering what looked like to be an engine problem part way through the race. Matt would pass and overtake Shane and Conor would shortly after. Leaving Dean Baker to bide his time and take third position from Shane as he missed a turn towards the end of the race. Eric Neilsen and Caitlin Johnston would battle when Eric found himself out of the race with engine failure. Final Standings for round three would be as follows; FFA Matt White first, Conor Daly second and Dean Baker third; FFB Andrew Mason receiving his first Podium in the series in first place, Lew Mckenzie in second and Nigel Mortimer in third; FFC Mike Lee took first with Andrew Celovsky in second. Qualifying round four starting positions mirrored Saturday for the top five with changes from sixth position on. Steve Pickering in car #30 qualified in sixth for round four swapping with Rick Doktor in car #90 who was sixth in round three but ninth in round four. Caitlin Johnston was seventh round four moving up two spots from Saturdays qualifying in round three. Steve Tzountzouris car #66 move down one position qualifying in eighth round four. Race four started with the FFA lead pack of Shane Jantzi, Matt White, Conor Daly and Dean Baker running closely together. Shane was able to pull ahead as the other three drivers jockeyed for position. The first four positions opened up as Jantzi increased his lead while Baker ran a strong fourth keeping a safe distance from the dicing pair of White and Daly, ready to pounce if either made a mistake. A full-course yellow brought about by Rick Doktor’s car being stopped on track led to the pace car being brought out which closed the field back up and negated the lead which Shane had built over the rest of the field. The restart with only a couple of laps to go made for nail biting tension as the entire field attempted to make up positions with a dash to the finish. While Jantzi stayed ahead at the restart Daly and White clearly hounded him and were not going to allow Jantzi any opportunity to breakaway from the pack. Daly in second position made contact with the rear wheel of Jantzi’s car attempting a pass on the last lap with two turns to go, damaging both cars. Jantzi seemingly unfazed held his position and crossed the line in first. White did not need an invitation and pounced on Daly finishing second, leaving Daly to coax his car across the finishing line in third before having to pull over to the side of the track. Baker who was not close enough to take advantage of the situation crossed the line in fourth. The FFB was also hotly contested with FFB cars mixing it up with some of the FFA cars. In the final run to the chequered flag, Dan Purdy car #23 finished first in class, followed by Nigel Mortimer car #05 and Sean Cadney car #22, a great drive from the young driver who was returning for his first race weekend since damaging his car early in the 2007 season. Mike Lee car #25 in FFC class returning this season after being plagued by gremlins in the 2006 season was on a roll, logging another first place. Glyn Walters car #82 who was unable to start race three after breaking a header during qualifying on Saturday, worked on his car on Saturday night and Sunday morning and put himself on the podium in second place for race four. Andrew Celovsky was unable to start after sustaining suspension damage during qualifying on Sunday. Drivers were thrilled when well-known ex-racer and speed channel commenter Derek Daly who attended the weekend with his son Conor, agreed to present the honours at the podium. The next rounds are at the Toronto Tirecraft 100 held at the Sunoco 94 Father’s Day Double Header Weekend on June 13-15, 2008. The regional race weekend was held at the famed Mosport International Raceway www.mosport.com on May 10th and 11th, Mothers Day Weekend. The weekend did not disappoint and confirmed that this would be a season of reckoning between teams, owners and drivers. The OFFC was first up on the weekend schedule with practice held promptly at 9:00 am, Saturday May 10th. It was clear that this was again a large field of 1600's to contest the coveted podium positions for all three classifications. Twenty-three cars were competing this weekend with classes FFA, FFB and FFC, all represented. Series regulars and champions Shane Jantzi, Maizex Seeds Inc. car #71 and Matt White, Roundup car #05 sparred with Conor Daly, INDECK Forsythe Racing car #2, while not a new comer to the series, Conor is a new season’s regular driver. The series indeed has a very strong field of contenders for the Brian Strewart IPS Drive. While both Shane Jantzi and Matt White have received this drive, Conor’s season will be a battle with other series hopefuls Caitlyn Johnson, Pizza Pizza car #68, Steve Arens PenDragon Design and Engineering Services car #20, Michael Broomhead, Huntington Society of Canada car #64, and Rick Dotkor, Tim Horton’s car #90, both Michael and Rick run for David Clubine’s Britian West Motorsports. Qualifying laps in round one quickly found seconds shaving off lap times as drivers re-accustomed themselves with their race vehicles. One would be amiss not to remember the lap-time records at Mosport that were broken numerous times last year. It is clear that this thought will be forefront on minds of many OFFC fans. All said qualifying positions stacked up with Conor Daly on pole sharing front row with Matt White, Shane Jantzi was third sharing second row with Dean Baker, Kerr Industries Ltd. car #52. Newcomer Hayden Duerson, Brian Graham Racing car #4, qualified 5th. Caitlyn Johnson’s weekend would be finished after engine failure took her out of contention. This would leave Caitlyn scratching for round two of the series repairing her engine for future rounds this season. First and second positions would be swapped back and forth throughout the race, making it a nail biter to the end. Class FFA round one finished with Matt White in first, Conor Daly in second and Shane Jantzi in third. Class FFB round one finished with Lew McKenzie, Forbes and Manhattan, car #96 in first, Ivan Graham car #3 in second and Nigel Mortimer, Mortimer Racing car #95 in third. Class FFC round one finished with Mike Lee, BlueGates Productions car #25 in first, Tony Cove car #83 in second and Andrew Celvosky, Speedpro Signs car #124 in third. The OFFC family was thrilled to see that the late Gord Lowe’s spouse Karen Brodie was there to watch the racing, reminisce with good friends and later hand out podium honours to Class FFB and FFC drivers. Round Two would have changes on the podium for Class FFB and FFC. Results for Class FFA would be similar to round one with position changes. Matt White would press during qualifying and take pole for round two. Again for a second time this weekend fans watched a nail-biter; positions were changing almost every lap. First place honours for round two were Class FFA Matt White in first, Conor Daly in second and Shane Jantzi in third. Class FFB round two honours went to Dan Purdy car #23 for first, Lew MacKenzie in second and Ivan Graham in third. Class FFC Tony Cove would not race second round and Andrew Celvosky would suffer a DNF. Mike Lee would take FFC first place for round two. To do this Conor will drop the originally planned Stars of Karting TaG championship. Conor drove three races in 2007 for BGR scoring a podium finish in Shannonville Motorsport Park . “We very quickly developed a good relationship with Conor last year. His speed and ability, with such little time in the car, makes me think that we are well positioned to attempt to pull off a repeat championship win this year also” said team owner, Brian Graham . “I need as much mileage as I can get and with BGR I have the advantage of being guided by a very experienced and successful team. I want to learn as much as possible this year, and this is a perfect part of the plan” said Conor. Sixteen year old Conor Daly, son of former Formula One/Indy Car driver turned TV commentator Derek Daly, will race in the 14 round Skip Barber Racing National series in addition to the Canadian Ontario Formula Ford Championship with BGR. He will also do selected karting events. Conor will race his karts exclusively on Bridgestone tires and will be sponsored by INDECK Forsythe Racing, Cytomax Performance Drink, Pedigo Chevrolet, The College Network, Tom Lange Company, Aprilia and Alpinestars.
